Round-number birthdays are the ones a girl remembers, and they are also the ones where the usual card sentence gives out. Wishing you health and happiness means nothing to a five-year-old and even less to a sixteen-year-old who has already read that exact line on four cards this morning. What lands is the number itself, said plainly, and one thing that is true about her right now. That is why the wishes below are sorted by the age she is turning rather than by who is signing them: five, ten, thirteen, sixteen, eighteen and twenty-one are six completely different people, and a message built for one of them earns a blank look from the other five. A five-year-old wants to hear what she can do now that she could not do last year. A thirteen-year-old wants to be addressed as somebody with opinions. At sixteen, eighteen and twenty-one the only register that works is the one you would use with an adult. Every message here is finished.
Her fifth birthday: a whole hand of fingers
Five whole years old, and a whole hand of fingers to show for it. You know your favorite color, you know your favorite song, and you know exactly how you want your pancakes. That is more than most grown-ups have figured out. Have the best day.
Happy 5th birthday. Five is a big one: you buckle your own seatbelt, you pour your own juice, and you can tell a whole story from the beginning to the end without stopping once. Here is to a year full of more things you get to do yourself.
Turning five means you hold up one hand and say the number without counting it first. Nobody helps you with that anymore. Have a wonderful birthday, and take the biggest slice on the table.
You are five today. Old enough to pick the movie, old enough to blow out every candle in one breath, and old enough to spot a vegetable hiding under something else on your plate. Wishing you a day made entirely of things you love.
At five you ask the best questions in this family. Some of them nobody can answer, and that is the whole point of them. Keep asking. We hope this year brings you good answers and even better questions, and a very happy birthday.
Five today. You know every word of one song, the name of every dog on your block, and precisely where the good crackers are kept. Wishing you a birthday as loud and as happy as you feel like making it.
This is your fifth birthday, which means five candles, five wishes, and a whole year of kindergarten waiting for you. We hope you love it. Have a great day, and save somebody a piece of cake.
Turning ten: the first birthday with two numbers in it
Ten. Two digits for the first time ever, and you never go back to one. You got braver this year, too: you tried the thing that scared you and you did it anyway. Happy 10th birthday, and here is to a year full of the next brave thing.
Happy 10th! Double digits, and you have been ready for them for a while. Ten is old enough to have real opinions about music, real opinions about food and a real answer when somebody asks what you want to do. Hold on to all three.
You are ten today, which makes this the first birthday with two numbers in it. Somewhere in the last year you turned into the person your friends call when something goes wrong. That is a big deal, and it did not go unnoticed. Have a great birthday.
Ten years old. You read whole books now without anybody asking you to, and you remember every single thing anyone ever tells you, which the rest of us find mildly alarming. Wishing you a fantastic day and a year with plenty in it.
Happy birthday to a ten-year-old who works harder than she gives herself credit for. This year you got better at something because you kept going, not because it came easily. That is the part worth celebrating today.
Ten is a great number. Old enough to stay up later, old enough to run the music in the car, old enough to be trusted with the secret about the cake. Have exactly the day you want.
Double digits today. From here on your age has two numbers in it and you have ninety-odd years to get used to that. Enjoy the cake, enjoy the noise, and enjoy being ten.
Turning thirteen: writing to a brand-new teenager
Thirteen. Officially a teenager, and the first one in this house to say so out loud. You earned the title honestly: you argue well, you back it up, and you change your mind when the facts change. Happy birthday, and welcome to the loudest decade.
Happy 13th birthday. Thirteen is the year people start asking you what you think instead of telling you. Take the question seriously and answer it honestly. We are looking forward to hearing all of it.
You are thirteen today, which means the next seven birthdays all end in teen and this is the one that starts it off. Whatever this year turns into, most of it is yours to decide. Have a great birthday.
Thirteen years old and already better at hard conversations than half the adults you know. Whatever else the year brings, do not lose that. Wishing you a birthday exactly the way you want it and not one bit the way anybody else planned it.
Welcome to thirteen, the newest teenager in the family. Thirteen comes with a few new privileges and a few new arguments, and you are ready for both. Here is to a year where you get to try things that are entirely your own idea.
Thirteen. This is the age where the choosing starts: your friends, your music, what a Saturday is for. Choose the things that are actually yours and not the ones that look right from the outside. Happy birthday.
Turning thirteen today. Nobody hands you a manual, and nobody warns you how fast the year goes. What you do get is a family on your side no matter which way it goes. Have a good one.
Sweet Sixteen: what to write for her 16th
Sixteen. The year of the permit, the practice hours and the alarming moment somebody finally hands you the keys. Happy Sweet Sixteen. Take the turns slowly and take the day at full speed.
Happy 16th birthday. Sixteen is the first age that arrives with real logistics: a schedule of your own, a job maybe, a car eventually, and people counting on you to show up. You are already better at that than most of us were.
Sweet Sixteen, and the sweetest part is that you get a say in it now. Where you go, who you go with, when you come home, within reason. Have the birthday you have been planning in your head since the summer.
Sixteen today. Somewhere between the pickup line at school and this, you turned into the person other people ask for advice. Enjoy every part of today, and let the ones who love you make a fuss for one afternoon.
Happy Sweet Sixteen. Sixteen is a genuinely big one here and you should get the whole thing: the party, the noise, the pictures nobody is going to let you delete. Wishing you a year that lives up to the day.
Sixteen, and you have already worked out something most people learn much later: who is worth your time. Guard that. Happy birthday, and here is to a year with plenty of the right people in it.
You are sixteen today. Take the day off from everything on your list, because the list will still be there tomorrow and this only happens once. Happy Sweet Sixteen, and let somebody else drive.
Turning eighteen: wishes for a girl who is legally an adult
Eighteen. From today the signature on the form is yours, the choices are yours, and so is the fallout. Not one person here is worried about that. Happy birthday, and take your time deciding what comes next.
Happy 18th birthday. You can vote now, which means the arguments at this table finally count for something outside this table. Use it. Wishing you a year where you find out how much of it is genuinely up to you.
You turn eighteen today, and the strange part is that nothing about you changed overnight. The paperwork simply caught up with the person you already were. Have a great birthday, and know the door here stays open.
Eighteen years old. Old enough to be asked serious questions, and old enough to answer I have not decided yet, which is a perfectly good answer at eighteen and still a good one at forty. Happy birthday. Take the year as it comes.
Eighteen, with better judgment than most people twice that age. Whatever this year holds, including a plan that changes three times before spring, you will handle it, and you will not be handling it alone. Happy birthday.
Eighteen. The last birthday somebody else organizes for you and the first one you get to organize yourself. Both are worth marking. Wishing you a day that runs at exactly your speed.
Turning eighteen means the small stuff becomes your problem: the appointments, the forms, the phone calls nobody enjoys making. It also means everything good you build from here belongs to you. Happy birthday. Call when you want to, not when you think you have to.
Turning twenty-one: wishes for her 21st
Twenty-one, and every door that was shut on a technicality is open now. Happy birthday. Go through the ones worth going through, and bring good people with you.
Happy 21st birthday. Twenty-one is the age where nobody is checking on you anymore, which turns out to be a lot more work than it sounds. You are ready for it. Wishing you a year that pays you back for the effort.
You are twenty-one today. Somewhere in the last couple of years you started making decisions nobody consulted us about, and every one of them has been sound. Have a great birthday. We are proud of you, and we are saying it out loud on purpose.
Twenty-one. Old enough to be trusted with your own schedule, your own plans and your own mistakes, and sharp enough to keep that last category small. Happy birthday, and enjoy every hour of it.
Happy birthday to a twenty-one-year-old who never needed half the help everybody assumed she did. Whatever this year turns into, take up more room in it than you think you are allowed to.
Twenty-one years ago this family got a lot more interesting, and it has never gone back. Thank you for that. Have the kind of birthday you are still describing to people in the fall, and answer your phone tomorrow, because half of us will be calling.
Turning twenty-one is the last of the big numbers for a while, so make it count. After this one the birthdays get quieter and the years get faster. Happy birthday. Take the whole day for yourself.
When there is only room for one line
Five today. Five candles, five wishes, and cake for breakfast if you play this right.
Happy 10th. Two digits from here on, and you have earned every one of them.
Thirteen. Officially a teenager. We are ready if you are.
Happy Sweet Sixteen. Sixteen looks like a good year on paper. Go make it one.
Eighteen today. Everything from here is yours to sign for. Have a great one.
Happy 21st. Old enough for all of it, sharp enough for most of it.
Ten years old and braver than you were at nine. Happy birthday.
Sixteen. The keys, the schedule, the freedom. Enjoy all three.
Thirteen today, and already the most interesting person at this table.
Eighteen. Legally an adult, and still the one who makes this house louder. Have a great day.
Five whole years. Hold up the whole hand and show them.
Twenty-one at last. The countdown is over. Go enjoy it.
Questions and answers
Every card for a girl seems to say she is growing into a beautiful young woman. Is there anything wrong with that?
It is the most common line on these cards and the least useful one in them. A compliment about how she looks turns a birthday into an assessment with a date attached, and on a milestone that is the sentence she rereads years later. By thirteen she is already fielding remarks about her appearance from every direction, and a card is one of the few places where nobody has to. Write about what she can do instead: she stuck with something after it got hard, she told somebody an uncomfortable truth kindly, she walks into a room and gets people talking. None of that can be undone by a bad week. Beautiful young woman could go on a card for anybody her age, and that is the real trouble with it.
At thirteen she has her own phone. Who does the birthday message go to now?
To her, directly, and this catches out the relatives who spent a decade sending everything through her mother. A message delivered through a parent arrives as a summary, Grandma says happy birthday, and a thirteen-year-old hears that as being handled rather than addressed. The same words sent to her own number say something heavier: that she is a person you have your own line to. Change what you send as well as where you send it. Nothing borrowed from her mother’s tone, nothing that would mortify her if a friend read over her shoulder, and no expectation of a fast reply. She will read it, feel it, and answer with one word four hours later. At that age one word is a full response.
What is a Sweet Sixteen card supposed to say, when the day itself is already so big?
The opposite of whatever the party is doing. A sixteenth arrives with a guest list, a theme, photographs and a room full of people, all of it aimed at the group. The card is the only part of the day addressed to one person, so keep it quiet, specific and about her rather than the event. Skip the recap of the party she is standing in. Name one thing you noticed in her this year instead: a decision she made, the way she handled somebody difficult, something she stuck with after it stopped being fun. Sixteen is also when the license, the first job and a real schedule arrive at once, so a line about being trusted with more beats anything about growing up.
Her eighteenth birthday and her graduation land within a few months of each other. How do you keep the card from turning into a second graduation card?
By writing to the age instead of to the achievement. Graduation cards are about what she finished and what comes next, and they arrive in a stack of near-identical ones. A birthday card that repeats it hands her a fifth round of the same conversation and no acknowledgment that she also turned eighteen, which happened to her alone rather than to her whole class. So keep school out of it. Eighteen is about what she is now allowed to decide for herself, and the strongest thing a card can do is treat those decisions as hers without attaching guidance on how to make them. Separate the timing as well: give it on the actual birthday, even when the celebrations were combined.
Twenty-one is the drinking milestone. Does a card from family acknowledge that?
Barely, and never as the joke. Twenty-one comes with one obvious punchline, every friend at the table is already using it, and a card from a parent, an aunt or a grandparent reaching for the same material reads as an adult auditioning for the friend group. It is also the one card she will not read out loud. What family has and friends do not is the long view: you can say what she was like at eleven and what she is like now, and nobody else in the room can do that. If you want to mention the night itself, keep it to one practical sentence that sounds like care rather than a warning. One sentence is care; three is a lecture with a candle on top.
