Every card for a girl seems to say she is growing into a beautiful young woman. Is there anything wrong with that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt is the most common line on these cards and the least useful one in them. A compliment about how she looks turns a birthday into an assessment with a date attached, and on a milestone that is the sentence she rereads years later. By thirteen she is already fielding remarks about her appearance from every direction, and a card is one of the few places where nobody has to. Write about what she can do instead: she stuck with something after it got hard, she told somebody an uncomfortable truth kindly, she walks into a room and gets people talking. None of that can be undone by a bad week. Beautiful young woman could go on a card for anybody her age, and that is the real trouble with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At thirteen she has her own phone. Who does the birthday message go to now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nTo her, directly, and this catches out the relatives who spent a decade sending everything through her mother. A message delivered through a parent arrives as a summary, Grandma says happy birthday, and a thirteen-year-old hears that as being handled rather than addressed. The same words sent to her own number say something heavier: that she is a person you have your own line to. Change what you send as well as where you send it. Nothing borrowed from her mother’s tone, nothing that would mortify her if a friend read over her shoulder, and no expectation of a fast reply. What is a Sweet Sixteen card supposed to say, when the day itself is already so big?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe opposite of whatever the party is doing. A sixteenth arrives with a guest list, a theme, photographs and a room full of people, all of it aimed at the group. The card is the only part of the day addressed to one person, so keep it quiet, specific and about her rather than the event. Skip the recap of the party she is standing in. Name one thing you noticed in her this year instead: a decision she made, the way she handled somebody difficult, something she stuck with after it stopped being fun. Sixteen is also when the license, the first job and a real schedule arrive at once, so a line about being trusted with more beats anything about growing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her eighteenth birthday and her graduation land within a few months of each other. How do you keep the card from turning into a second graduation card?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nBy writing to the age instead of to the achievement. Graduation cards are about what she finished and what comes next, and they arrive in a stack of near-identical ones. A birthday card that repeats it hands her a fifth round of the same conversation and no acknowledgment that she also turned eighteen, which happened to her alone rather than to her whole class. So keep school out of it. Eighteen is about what she is now allowed to decide for herself, and the strongest thing a card can do is treat those decisions as hers without attaching guidance on how to make them. Separate the timing as well: give it on the actual birthday, even when the celebrations were combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty-one is the drinking milestone. Does a card from family acknowledge that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nBarely, and never as the joke. Twenty-one comes with one obvious punchline, every friend at the table is already using it, and a card from a parent, an aunt or a grandparent reaching for the same material reads as an adult auditioning for the friend group. It is also the one card she will not read out loud. What family has and friends do not is the long view: you can say what she was like at eleven and what she is like now, and nobody else in the room can do that. If you want to mention the night itself, keep it to one practical sentence that sounds like care rather than a warning.
