It stays in the drafts, and what actually goes out is have a great day, call me later. The trouble is that a son rarely offers a second opening: he is not going to sit through the conversation, and he is certainly not going to ask for it. A birthday is the one day in the year when four or five honest sentences need no explaining and no follow-up. That is the length used below, long enough to hold a memory, a piece of recognition and a wish for the year ahead, and short enough that he is not left owing you a reply. The messages are sorted by where he is in his life, from a small boy to a grown man with a household of his own, and then by who is signing, because the same warmth reads differently from a father and from a mother. You are the loudest and the best part of every day in this house, and none of us can remember what it was like before you got here. I hope this year is full of the things you love most, right down to the same story at bedtime. I am proud of you today, and I will be proud of you every year after this one.

2
You are one year older today and about a hundred times braver than you were last winter. I watched you try the thing that scared you and do it anyway, and I have thought about it more times than you know. Have the best birthday. There is nobody in the world I would rather have as my son.

3
My son, happy birthday. The house is louder because of you, the days are longer because of you, and I would not hand back a single minute of either. I hope today turns out exactly the way you have been picturing it, all the way down to the cake. Thank you for being mine.

4
You ask questions nobody can answer, you notice things the rest of us walk straight past, and you are kind to people without anybody telling you to be. Those three things are going to carry you a long way. Today the whole day is yours, buddy, and so is the biggest slice. Happy birthday.

5
Another birthday for my boy, and I am not ready for any of them. I know these years go somewhere, and I know there will come a day when I want them back, so today I am paying attention to all of it: the noise, the mess, your face when the candles come out. I love you. Have the best day.

For a teenage son

1
You are at the age where I am supposed to know less every year, and honestly, on a fair number of subjects you are right. What I do know is that you are turning into somebody people trust. Three different friends came to you this year with something they could not say to anyone else. That tells me everything I need. Have a great birthday.

2
To my son on his birthday. I know I am not always easy to live with, and I know this year had some hard weeks in it for both of us. None of that changes the plain fact underneath: you are the best thing I have ever been part of. Today take the day off from everything, including me.

3
Happy birthday. Somewhere in the last couple of years you stopped needing me for the small things, and it turns out I am prouder of that than I expected to be. You run your own schedule, your own problems and most of your own decisions now. Keep going. I am still here for the ones that are too big to carry alone, and that part is not changing.

4
You are another year older and I keep catching glimpses of the man you are going to be. He is patient, he is funny, and he does not walk past somebody who needs help. I hope you can see him too. Happy birthday, son. This year, try being as kind to yourself as you are to everybody else.

5
Happy birthday to my teenage son, who is taller than me, faster than me, and still asks me to sit down when something is bothering him. Have a good one.

For a grown son

1
Happy birthday, son. Somewhere along the line you stopped being somebody I take care of and became somebody I go to for advice, and I am still adjusting to it. You have built a life that works, on your own terms, without asking anyone for permission. That is rarer than you think. Enjoy today, and let people make a fuss over you.

2
To my son on his birthday. I watched you handle things this year that I would have struggled with at twice your age, and you did it without making anybody else carry any of it. I hope this year gives you back some of what you have been handing out. You are a good man. That is the whole message.

3
When you were small I used to lie awake wondering who you would turn out to be. I stopped wondering a long time ago, and now I mostly just enjoy watching. Whatever you are working toward this year, I hope it comes through for you. Happy birthday, and come home when you can. The door does not lock.

4
Another birthday, and every year I understand a little more of what my own parents were trying to say and never managed. So here it is plainly: I am proud of you, I like the person you are, and being your parent has been the best work of my life. Have a wonderful day, son.

5
You have never once made a big deal out of anything you have done. You should. Since you will not, you can hear it from me today: you are steady, you are decent, and every person around you is better off for it. Take the day, son. You have earned a hundred of them.

For a son who lives far away

1
Birthday wishes from a long way off. What I miss is not the big occasions, it is the ordinary evenings: the door going, your voice from the other room, hearing about a day I did not have to ask about. Today I will settle for a phone call. Have a wonderful birthday, and tell me all of it.

2
It is your birthday and I am too far away to make the cake, so this will have to do the job instead. The miles have not made you any less present here. You come up in conversation most days, usually because somebody wants to know what you would do about something. Happy birthday, son. Come home when you can.

3
Happy birthday to my son, who lives more hours away than I would like. I keep an eye on your weather, which is a strange thing to admit to, but it makes the map feel smaller. Whatever today looks like where you are, I hope somebody there is making a fuss over you. If not, take this as me doing it from here.

4
Another birthday spent at opposite ends of a phone. I have made my peace with most of it, because you went where the work was and that took real nerve. What I have not made peace with is missing the small things. Happy birthday. Call once the day quiets down and tell me the parts you would never put in a message.

5
My whole wish this year is that you have people out there who look after you the way we would if we could get to you. Does the birthday message still go to him alone?

Yes, and it is worth protecting. Once a son settles down, family communication quietly reroutes through the household: the group text, the shared calendar, the message that opens with hope you both. Fine for logistics, wrong for a birthday, which is the one day that belongs to him as himself rather than as half of an arrangement. Send it to his own number, early, before the day fills up, and put something in it only a parent would know. Then thank his partner separately for whatever they are putting together, because the person organizing a birthday almost never gets thanked and it costs one message. A birthday message addressed to a couple is a family update with a candle drawn on it.

He is a father himself now. What changes in what a parent writes?

Your standing does. Until then a birthday message from a parent is recognition handed downward: proud of you, look how far you have come. Once he is raising somebody, that register starts to sound like a performance review from a former boss. The material that works now is level with him — what you see him doing well as a parent, said plainly and with no comparison to how you did it. Two things to leave out. The birth story at length, because that memory is yours and it turns his birthday into your anniversary. And any advice about his kids, which no card has ever survived. One sentence about the day he was born is the right size, and it should finish on him rather than on you.

Does a birthday message to a son have to include advice?

No, and leaving it out is most of what separates a message he keeps from one he skims. The parental reflex is to add a lesson at the end: work hard, take care of yourself, do not forget where you came from. Every one of those converts the message from recognition into instruction, and he has been receiving instruction from you his entire life. The birthday is the one day it is not required of you. If the pull to hand him something useful is too strong, give a promise rather than a rule: that you will pick up the phone, that the room is his whenever he wants it, that you will not ask questions unless he wants them asked. A promise asks nothing of him. Advice does the reverse.

His father and I are separated. Do we send one message or two, and does the other parent get mentioned?

Two, written independently, and neither one mentions the other. A son with two households does a quiet amount of accounting on his birthday, and he will read both messages within a few minutes of each other whether you intended that or not. What he is checking is not who wrote more, but whether either message asks him to take a side. Anything about the other parent, including a compliment or a hope that they remembered, puts him in the middle on the one day he should be out of it. Do not coordinate the wording either, since matching messages read as a negotiated statement. Write your own, sign it from you, and let the day be his. If he brings up the other card, keep it light and move on.

It is an ordinary birthday. He is turning twenty-seven, there is no party, nothing to mark. Is a long message out of place?

It is the best year you will get for one. Milestone birthdays arrive with a crowd, and anything heartfelt has to compete with a room, a schedule and forty other messages saying roughly the same thing. An ordinary birthday has no competition at all: a few texts come in, the day passes, and five honest sentences land in an empty field. That is why the years ending in three and seven are quietly the best ones to use. There is no audience either, which means you can write the thing you would never say across a table full of relatives. Keep it in proportion, since this is a message and not a letter, and do not open by announcing that it is a strange year to be writing. Just write it.

There is a particular message a parent writes to a son and then does not send, because on the screen it looks like too much.
