Manhattan is an island, and these five parks sort by where they sit on it. Central Park is the engineered middle \u2014 843 acres of meadow, woodland and open water blasted out of Manhattan schist between 1857 and 1876. Riverside Park is the western edge, four miles of terraced Hudson shoreline facing the New Jersey Palisades. The Battery is the southern tip, twenty-five acres where the streets stop and New York Harbor begins. The High Line runs 1.45 miles above the West Side on a freight viaduct whose last train ran in 1980. Bryant Park is fewer than ten acres of Midtown behind the New York Public Library.<\/p>\n

Scale is the first filter, and the spread is wide: a full day to walk Central Park to its northern gardens, forty-five minutes to take in Bryant Park. The second is what you want underfoot \u2014 designed wilderness, a planted viaduct you take in one line, a harbor railing with the Statue of Liberty in view, a gravel terrace with thousands of movable chairs, or a bluff with an open western horizon. Subway lines reach all five, so the real question is who you go with, and at what hour.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n
